Croatia

Everything still hurts. Sorry about slacking on the updates guys, I’ve been blaming it on Flickr and that’s mostly true, although two weeks on random beaches in Croatia will make it hard to get motivated about anything besides hanging out on random beaches in Croatia. I’m not sure what I was expecting when Shefali first proposed that we come here. Well, that’s not true. To be completely honest I was expecting patchy facial hair and bowl haircuts, one lonely caterpillar of an eyebrow for every square head, contorted mutants hobbling around on all fours with gaps in their smiles larger than their teeth trying to pass off pieces of driftwood and seashells as currency. Overt racism aside, we kind of fell in love with Croatia from the second we hit the seashore. Zagreb was cool but it’s a landlocked city in the north. Start there, but don’t finish there. Because the beach is the only thing that will be on your mind. We went to Split next, which was apparently the former capital of the Roman empire. And while there are Roman ruins all over, including the ruins of Diocletian’s palace, it doesn’t have the same regal nature as ruins in Italy. Why? Because people just moved right into the ruins and started selling kebabs and aquasocks out of them, retrofitting electric wiring and plumbing as necessary. It was a bit funny to me, knowing that you were buying cheap crap you didn’t really need from someone whose storefront was itself a priceless piece of history in which they were possibly squatting. But back to the matter at hand – Croatia is rightfully famous for its beaches. All of Europe seems to have already known this. We hopped through a few of them on our way to Montenegro and every single one was calm and pristine – so much so that you could see clear to the bottom even three stories up on a ferry. We ended up spending like two weeks here, and it was good to see Shefali somewhere she was genuinely excited. Take your time and really go through all 7 images galleries, this is probably the most beautiful place we’ve been yet.
