Copenhagen is ÆWESOME! We got here a little late but without incident. I had been here before but never experienced it like this. It’s a gorgeous city and has the common Scandinavian trait of kitchens closing at 10 but clubs and bars serving alcohol until 5 in the morning. But, more than that, it has a really interesting, almost tragicomic history that we were lucky enough to hear in great detail on a free walking tour we took throughout the city. The short version is that it has a protracted and repeated relationship with fire. The long version is much more entertaining and involves nazi occupation, the fourth largest brewery group in the world, biker gangs and more. Seriously. And I couldn’t possibly do it justice, so I’ll just leave you a little present at [1]. So far, it’s stood out the most to us as a city with plenty to experience and a cultural identity of its own. It’s a fun place with active and friendly people (supposedly the happiest people in the world) — except when you step in front of them on their bikes. We learned this empirically. I thought I was gonna have to bust out the krav magumbo! But in the end, he just cursed at us in fantastic English and rode the other way, and for a brief moment I felt like I was basking in that familiar east coast hostility and any homesickness was far, far away. And that wasn’t the only slice of home – a few of you will get a chuckle from one pic in particular (you know who you are). It was super cool and still pricey, but nowhere near as bad as Stockholm. We met a lot of cool people at the hostel, even one from PHL! And we rented a bike and cursed at tourists too. It was off the chain. …Get it?
